Skoda has announced it has begun production of the Octavia E Line, the company's first fully elec- tric car, first seen in concept form at last year's Paris Motor Show. Starting this northern hemisphere autumn, the Czech carmaker will manufacture a test fleet of 10 cars for evaluation of the emissions-free tech- nology. This will help Skoda collect valuable data for future applications to reduce its average CO2 emissions. Electric vehicles are the right answer to the increasingly stringent emission limits,'' said Skoda's Dr Eckhard Scholz. Based on the Octavia Combi, the E Line features a 26.5-kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack under the floor and an electric motor with a con- stant output of 60kW and a maximum power of 85kW. As with all electric motors, its torque (270 newton metres) is available immediately. The Octavia E Line reaches a top speed of 135kmh and its maximum range is about 140 kilometres. Volvo, meanwhile, is looking at smaller, more fuel-efficient engines at this month's Frankfurt Motor Show. It's time to stop counting cylinders,'' says Volvo's research chief Peter Martens. Its four-cylinder direct-injection petrol concept car, plus a common rail diesel unit, proves small engines can go hand in hand with luxury and driving pleasure, Mr Martens said.
