Circus lesson By PRIYANKA BHONSULE Miriam Randall is not running away to join the circus but she is teaching the ringside arts to other pupils at her school. All senior Raphael House Rudolph Steiner pupils are required to select a challenging final year project and this is Miriam's. Her passion for circus was sparked in Germany during a six-month exchange. Her host school had a cir- cus performance of its own. When I came back I decided I wanted to pursue it so I joined Wel- lington Circus Trust in Miramar.'' [The final year challenge is] a self-motivated project so there is no- one to check up on you, so it's better if you're really into the subject,'' Miriam says. She put out the call for performers last year and received so many responses she had to turn down some of the younger kids and focus on year 6 upwards. It was mind-boggling at the beginning because I'd never taught before and I was so new to the whole circus thing myself. But we're getting there and the time limits are starting to kick in.'' She says feedback from kids and parents has been positive and some of the youngsters are keen to join the Circus Trust to pursue it further. Miriam hopes to join Circus Aote- aroa and travel with them on their six-month national tour. Other year 13 student projects include forays into film-making, story writing, photography, ani- mation, guitar making and even equine therapy. An exhibition of all project work will be open to public in the Lower Hutt Little Theatre foyer on Friday, Septem- ber 30, 1.30pm till 4.30pm, and Saturday, October 1, 11am till 12.45pm and 2.45pm till 3.30pm. Project presentations will be held on Saturday from 1pm till 5.15pm.
