David Kiddey, CEO of the Chamber, said that there had been a strong field of entries again this year. The judges have reported that the standard of entries is even higher than in past years, making it difficult to decide who gets into the finals and who doesn't. As in previous years it's often the detail that counts, with a well-prepared entry sometimes scoring the extra mark that gets it into the finals. The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner to be held on Wednesday 16th November. Leg burner:Arunner tackles Mt Climie in Upper Hutt, which author Hayden Shearmanrates the toughest in his new trails guide. CONTINUED Page 29 By SIMON EDWARDS Runners can find new inspi- ration and challenge when they tackle a new route, and that's a main reason Hutt resident Hayden Shearman put together his pocket Runner's Guide to Wellington. He speaks from experience. While he says he grew up in awe of running legends like Snell, Halberg and Walker, it wasn't until his twenties that he really dived into running as a release from work and life stress. Outside his day job writing for the Salvation Army publication War Cry he'd hit the Hutt River Trail or Wellington waterfront. But beautiful as those locations are, the novelty wears off after a while''. One day a friend introduced him to the trail on Tinakori Hill, starting out on the Northern Walkway and out to the rid- geline track. It became a favourite. HAYDEN RATES THE RUNS: His favourite: ''It's tough to choose but runningaround the Bays on a nice, sunnyand still day -- andIemphasise the still! -- is fantastic.'' By ''the Bays'', he says he's including not just the waterfront, but out to Island Bay, the Miramar Peninsular,or the Eastern Bays roundtoPencarrow. The toughest: ''Mt Climie, out the back of Upper Hutt. It's very appropriately named. It's a good 30 or 40 minutes if you're fit, straight up. The views are outstanding but your legs will be burning.''
