The new standards will not apply to buildings where work has been done to bring buildings up to current (33 per cent for heritage and 50 per cent for earthquake-prone) standards. Building owners needing to do work will have until 2018 to get their building up to scratch. Mr Jamieson said the com- mittee, which went behind closed doors to make its decision, was not swayed by the argument to wait until the impact of the Christchurch earthquakes become clearer. There was nothing stopping the council taking another look at the situation, he said. The proposed new rule does not apply to residential proper- ties and will now go to the policy committee for ratification. Mr Jamieson said the idea of Wallace Awards, to recognise building owners who have made an effort, had merit. People having coffee in a cafe in Jackson St had every right to know if the building was safe, he said. Passion proudly on show Dusky maid: Liz Graham of Newtown chats to another marcher.
