Turned his life around By PRIYANKA BHONSULE DETAILS What: NABBA Wellington Bodybuilding Champs When: Saturday, September 17. Judging starts 1pm. Tickets $15 / Finals at 6pm tickets $25 nabba.co.nz Where: Little Theatre It was a serious wake-up call for Greg Mawson when his doctor told him his liver was on its way out -- and he was not even a big drinker. Peaking at 117kg, the 35-year-old looked to bodybuilding to turn his weight problem around. This Saturday, Mawson will be competing for the fifth time in the NABBA (National Amateur Body Builders Association) Wellington Body- building Champs -- and there is no slowing him. I've learned a lot more about myself and what I can and can't do. You become your own scientist in a way -- putting healthy food to the test and going through a bit of trial and error to see what works.'' Bodybuilding has helped his self-confidence immensely''. I was quite shy before but now I have no shame,'' he laughs. Apart from the healthier lifestyle, the sport has made other parts of his life better too, he says. I work for an IT support company and when- ever people call me, it's because they have a prob- lem but I'm a lot more positive [about it] now -- I'm smiling down the phone a lot more.'' Mr Mawson was crowned Mr Manawatu in April this year and he says he has made changes since, based on judges' comments. I'm aiming to win Mr New Zealand next and at the moment I'm in the best position to achieve it.'' The competition on Saturday will be Mr Maw- son's chance to show off in the athletic class. My class is more about beach body than mass -- it's about symmetry and posing.'' He will be training and eating right to keep his weight under 87.4kg (based on a height- weight ratio). I'm quite passionate about bodybuilding. Being that I wasn't born with a six-pack, I believe other people can achieve it too. I've done 27 shows so far and I don't see the end just yet.'' Three of the best: Winning seems to come easy for Hutt Valley High School basketball teams. The senior girls strung together 58 wins to win the Wellington and national titles, and the senior boys did not let a lack of height stop them from winning the Wellington title. The junior boys, pictured, also had a winning formula, beating St Pat's Town 80 to 79 to win the Wellington title. HVHS went into the game ranked third after suffering two heavy defeats to St Pat's and making the final by beating Wellington College 64-63. The final was also a close affair, with HVHS winning 80-79. HVHS were coached by Shawn Beck.
