It is the first step towards branding the area as Technology Valley, an idea raised by Mayor Ray Wallace during the election campaign. Mayor Wallace has discussed it with his Upper Hutt counterpart and $100,000 was included in the Hutt City annual plan for science and tech- nology projects. Officers have received a variety of suggestions for the money -- ranging from sponsoring students to developing a virtual knowledge-sharing website -- but told the city development committee a stock- take was the best bet. Development manager Kim Kelly said a stra- tegic plan was the long-term aim. That could include such aims at doubling the number of scientists, but to do that, the council would first have to establish how many scientists there are in the Hutt Valley. The committee agreed to use $20,000 for a stocktake and prelimi- nary work to develop a strategic plan. Anastasia's is turning heads Stylish headwear: A sample of the fashionable hats made by Anastasia's for people who have lost their hair through chemotherapy or illness. Losing your hair through illness or chemotherapy treatment is hard enough. Trying to find affordable, attractive headwear can prove even trickier. That s why the team at Anastasia s in High St have been doing their bit to help, making trendy, fun hats at minimal cost for the past two years. For $10, customers can choose from a variety of colours, patterns and fabrics. Staff began making the caps when customers with breast cancer started asking for help in their search for head- gear. Much of the already available products were either unattractive or expensive. The staff s efforts received such posi- tive feedback that Anastasia s has continued making them, attracting a growing clientele through word of mouth. They now have women coming from throughout the region to purchase the hats, in fabrics which are comfortable and soft against the skin. Anastasia s is at 468 High St.
