The Eastern Hutt Ladies Probus Club marked its 25th birthday last week and there were plenty of foundation members joining in the celebrations. Two members who have been there since that first meeting in April 1986, Ngaire Abel and Gwladys Jessep, helped current president Barbara MacLennan cut the cake. Another founding member, Jocelyn Benstead, was awarded honorary membership. Shirley Wiseman, Glenda Smith and Lesley Lister gave interesting talks, including about the club's history. Probus is an offshoot of Rotary. It was on April 8, 1986, that Eastern Hutt Rotarians Dick Roberts and Jack Feehan opened the first meeting in the Hutt Valley, attended by 36 women, with Joan Fahey elected the first president. The Probus club is a social one, without fundraising or com- munity projects, and is open to all retired and semi-retired women. Its emphasis is on friendship and providing intellectual and cultural stimulation for its members, monthly coffee mornings and outings serving this purpose. Speakers provide food for thought and lively discussion, and have included the Banking Ombudsman, the Black Rod and Crime Stoppers, to name a few. Membership is now more than 70, and newcomers are always welcomed. The club meets at the Hutt Bridge Club, Park Ave (on a bus route) on the second Tuesday of the month. Email Barbara MacLennan at email@example.com for more information.
