Photo: HAZEL SINCLAIR A four-metre-long bronze sculpture by former Eastbourne resident Colin Webster-Watson has won the Welling- ton Civic Trust's Art in Our City -- People's Choice award. The award was announced on April 28 at a ceremony in the Wellington civic chambers, part of the trust's biennial awards competition for public open spaces. Six artworks were included in this year's competition: Webster-Watson's Frenzy at Taputeranga Reserve, Owhiro Bay; The Mover, a mural by Gabriel Heimler on the Museum Hotel; Regan Gentry's Subject to Change in Te Aro; Peter Trevelyan's Mimetic Brotherhood outside Te Papa; Phil Dadson's Akau Tangi on Cobham Drive; and Paul Dibble's From Under the Harbour in Tory St. Webster-Watson's nieces Anne and Catherine Manchester accepted the award on behalf of their uncle. My uncle only returned to New Zealand in 2004, after living most of his life in Europe and the United States. In three and a half years, he grew to love his adopted city and the community of Eastbourne,'' Anne Manchester said. The fact the people of Wellington have chosen his sculpture as their favourite is a tribute he would have enjoyed hugely. I am only sad he did not live long enough to see this recognition.'' As well as being an internationally recognised sculptor, Webster-Watson was a prolific poet. A collection of his poetry, edited by Manchester and Eastbourne writer and poet Mary McCallum, published by Steele Roberts, was launched at Rona Gallery in Eastbourne in March. The cover of Natural Zoo: poems, word-plays, performance pieces and other perorations features Colin's line drawing for Frenzy. Manchester and McCallum took over two years to sort through the many hundreds of poems Webster- Watson had written during his life- time. They were particularly excited to find several poems about East- bourne and Wellington among his papers, including Salute to the Great Possum Hunters of Eastbourne, Washday in Wellington and Conjuring Eastbourne. Natural Zoo is available at Unity Books, Rona Gallery in Eastbourne or can be ordered through Steele Roberts steeleroberts.co.nz.
