Phillip Johnston and Jaden Knight were jointly tried and convicted in 2004 for the arson of the Manawatu Hotel in Foxton. In 2005 their convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal and retrials ordered; Mr Johnston was re-tried in August 2006 and found not guilty. Evidence which came to light after that retrial showed neither man was responsible. Mr Knight was discharged in February 2007 before his retrial began. Mr Knight s mother, Neroli Edwards and Mr Johnston s mother, Darrel Arcus, believed their sons were innocent, and pooled their retirement funds to get the convictions overturned. Justice Minister Simon Power apologised to the men last week, say- ing he was disturbed at the way the system treated them. The standards that New Zealand- ers expect of their justice system fell well short in this case. Mr Johnston will receive compen- sation of $146,011 and Mr Knight $221,936. The compensation covers lost income, loss of liberty and repu- tation, loss or interruption with fam- ily or personal relationships, and mental and emotional harm. I hope it goes some way to helping them and their families put this very difficult experience behind them, Mr Power said. Top scholars: 2010 New Zealand Scholarship Top Scholar Award winners: Daniel Snell (Wellington College) for Latin, Ingrid Saker (Wellington Girls' College) for French, Erica Cai (Hutt Valley High School) for visual arts design and Tuurei-Haamiora Ormsby (formerly HVHS) for te reo rangatira. Photo: EMMA ALLEN/DOMINION POST HVHS excels in scholarship stake Hutt Valley High School students Erica Cai and Tuurei- Haamiora Ormsby were recognised for their academic excellence last week at Govern- ment House. The pair were among 41 of the country s best and brightest gathered to receive prizes for topping their scholarship exams. Erica Cai was top for visual art design while Tuurei- Haamiora Ormsby topped te reo rangatira. She also gained an outstanding scholarship in te reo Maori for 2010, and in 2009 was top scholar in te reo Maori. Principal Ross Sinclair said in the 2010 scholarship examinations, 23 Hutt High pupils gained 36 scholarships, including six at outstanding level, putting the school third in the greater Wellington region. I congratulate and thank students and staff, for the volun- tary extra hours that go in to preparing for these elite exams.
