Group fills social gap for young parents By LEE-ANNE EDWARDS ABC After and Before Childbirth is a programme launched last year for teen parents by Pregnancy Counselling Services, Plunket and Great Start House. Meeting from 10.30am till 12.30pm every Monday at Great Start House, 5 Cooper St, Taita, it's a place for young parents to get support and learn skills. The visit from Wellington Free Ambulance to Taita's ABC (After and Before Childbirth) group recently was for a talk on safety and first aid in the home. But for the children attending, the main interest was in the ambu- lance's flashing lights and siren. Paramedic Andrew Dunning spoke to the group of young parents and their children, then gave them a tour of the ambulance. The children couldn't wait to get in the driver's seat and play with the 250Db sirens and patterns of flashing lights,'' said Wendy Hill, of Pregnancy Counselling Services Wellington. All the young mums and dads learned more about identifying hazards and how gaining a first aid certificate could one day save the life of a child.'' The group regularly invites guest speakers and organises craft sessions and outings for members. Young mum Kerryn said the idea for the group came from students of the Heretaunga Teen Parent Unit. When people leave the teen par- ent college there is nothing out there for us and a lot of young parents feel really uncomfortable going to a general play group or play centre because they felt judged and awkward. There isn't really a lot of infor- mation out there for people either, so we set up this group for young parents who want to come out, meet people and get information and ideas on parenting.'' The group started in October 2010 and has members from Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley. But we have very few from Taita coming along, which is a shame because we're based here and easily access- ible. We'd like to get the word out.'' ABC welcomes anyone who provides services which may be useful to young parents and invites anyone who would like to join them to contact Wendy at Pregnancy Counselling Services on 0800 773 462, or Kerryn on 021 0259 4962.
